“Woh… hold on there…” Dominic raised his hands defensively, stopping at the threshold.

“Sophie, put… the… gun… down…” urged Emily, slowly.

Ignoring her, Sophie spoke to Dominic. “You’ve got some nerve, I give you that.” Her face was stony-hard and determined-looking.

“Sophie…” He spoke softly. “I…,” he started, he didn’t know what to say. “It was an accident. It was dark… and… the gun went off…”

Sophie shook her head, dismissing his reason. “You knew what you were doing. I saw you. You shot her in the stomach… she died slowly − painfully!”

“I’m SORRY…” the apology sounded forced through Dominic’s gritted teeth.

“She died on a road in the middle of nowhere,” Sophie continued. “Because of you, there are three children out there without a mother.” She stood up, the Glock pointing menacingly ahead of her as she closed the gap between herself and Dominic, her index finger coaxing the deadly promise the trigger offered.

“Sophie, listen to me,” Emily was trying to reason with her. “You don’t need to like him. He’s here to help us. Ryan sent him, remember.”

Sophie pressed the barrel of the gun against the side of Dominic’s head. “I dare you to struggle with me, Dominic,” almost a whisper. “Who knows, maybe I’ll have an ‘accident’ as well.”

Sweat or a bead of water from Dominic’s wet hair rolled down his forehead and trickled past his right eye. For several hurried heartbeats he was sure she was going to shoot him, then Sophie released the pressure against his head and lowered the gun. He sighed heavily.

“I’m truly sorry, Sophie,” Dominic offered. He still didn’t sound like he meant it. Sophie walked away, back to her bed. She tossed the Glock onto her pillow.
